The thing is that with different reference frames, there is a slim chance of agreement on what the past and present looks like. And how future events will unfold.

Is there a way to find common ground? Definitely. If we fast forward 100 years into the future, we'll hopefully see that we will do things differently. But what will education be like? Who will make the moves, who will present the new technology, who will adopt it and leverage it at scale? And as I have said before, EVERYTHING about Buzzword Bingo and the Hypecycle is possible today. But what is it that will change?

• Are the tools we will use in 10 years the ones that are buzzwordy right now?

• Will the business models have changed?

• Will the processes of integration change?

• How will the roles change for customers, integrators, educators?

• How does a younger workforce affect the industry culture?

• And will the systems change in existing buildings over the next decade?

• And have we managed to leverage AI in order to do things better, faster?

The systems in existing buildings, and possibly also in newly constructed buildings will most likely stay the same. But everything else might just be augmented using more modern tools, processes, business models, roles, and culture. And this will most likely drive change in the next decade. Fueled by a context of energy efficiency, net-zero buildings, sustainability and a focus on well-being and productivity.

All of this is what I would have talked about in Vegas. If I hadn’t had Covid just now and if the world wouldn’t be in turmoil. And is this the end of unexpected global events? Or just the beginning? The only thing we do know about the future is that it will be here whether we want it or not. But what do the future really consist of? What is it that will change if anything? And how can companies succeed in predicting the future? That is what I will talk a bit about.

How to win at Buzzword Bingo and to succeed in the age of AI

This session is for everyone who wants to understand the global drivers that affect any industry, who wants to de-mystify the buzz words, understand what goes on and to be able to control the future. The audience that will get most of the session might be decision makers, but also the engineers and master systems integrators and who need to manage risk and make the best decisions based on the available information.

Using one buzzword, to explain another buzzword… how can that be? Well, if you understand the meaning of both buzzwords, they just turn into words, tools, approaches, with certain capabilities, which put together will be the basis of how problems are solved in the future. Because that’s all there is. Remove the buzz, and the hype, and then you just have another tool in the toolbox.

There are a lot of companies today which don't necessarily understand how to sell, and some companies don't necessarily understand how to buy. This session is all about understanding how to get started with a dialogue, understanding how to manage risk and to make smarter decisions faster.

I think one of the most widely held misunderstandings of this topic is that the future will never arrive. We've got smartphones 14 years ago before that was a buzzword. And all the buzzwords that we have today, that we see today, they're going to be the smart phones at some point. Why not just go at it, leverage modern tools and technology to solve old problems?

Today. I believe that we have all the ingredients that we need. We have the systems, we have the standards, we have the people, but most of these things are distributed and fragmented. And it seems that we don't have the recipes. This topic will present a way for companies to create those recipes together and to be able to invite to innovate and to share knowledge on a global scale that will help the industry.

We see digital representations of reality kick in and when they are synced, we will see identical Digital Twins pop up everywhere. They will be able to record history as it unfolds and allow us to simulate any and all events as well as copy-paste the earth to do simulations of what decisions to make before we make them.

Fiction? Yes right now. At least on a global scale. But the path towards it has always been there. We can see that the NVIDIA Omniverse can do partly this for a factory. Scale it up to all corners of the world, and you have it.

We see that we can soon put in lenses that will allow us to see real-time data overlaid within our frame of vision. Miniature night vision goggles? What happens if we get hacked? Do they come with a freemium version with pop-ups and advertisements placed in our reality based on place and time?

And could modern tech be used to solve the most urgent challenges in reality? We can also see that countries are writing new constitutions to target climate change head-on. Chile is making waves with their future-ready ways of working.

Maybe soon they will also get the taxis as seen in Total Recall, driving around without a steering wheel. Companies are also stopping the production of combustion engines, the worlds largest offshore wind farm is now connected to the grid. And the generations to come are begging us from the future to create a more sustainable world that will be able to last forever.

And how do we do that? Do we transcend into the metaverse and utilize modern technology to first improve reality and then escape it? Or even create new forms of reality?

This is quite far away from 9600 baud rates and master systems integration and edge and cloud discussions. But this is the reality we live in.

Where people and companies now can copy everything they do into a digital/virtual copy of what they do. Real-time asset registries, to Real-Time Reality recording at scale. Interesting times are ahead and it is exciting to see when disruption will happen for real. If ever?

• China’s largest offshore wind farm is now fully connected to the grid. • Metahumans from Epic Games and 3Lateral doo Novi Sad. And we also see new virtual worlds emerging in parallel to the real world with names like the Metaverse, Multiverse, Omniverse even. It is no longer a tale about two cities, but actually infinite cities.

And in the real world we see Bitcoin cities being created powered with energy from Volcanoes. And we also see that AI is moving ahead faster than ever. Experiments are being done which blurs the line between Digital and Human. This is in 2021. What will the world be like in 5 years? 10 years?

Solana launched the first-ever “web-scale blockchain” in 2019 making it the only blockchain solution capable of hosting applications with the computational bandwidth akin to the modern internet, presenting the capability to power decentralized versions of Nasdaq, Facebook, Twitter, and all other existing blockchains.

• ABB announces investment in Canadian AI specialist BrainBox AI. ABB has announced an investment in Montreal-based startup BrainBox AI as part of the firm’s strategy to make buildings smarter while improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. BrainBox AI uses artificial intelligence to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions from Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial buildings.

• The Metaverse and How We'll Build It Together -- Connect 2021. Connect is more than a conference, it’s an opportunity to connect with others and be part of a global AR/VR community.

• Brain Implant Translates Paralyzed Man's Thoughts Into Text With 94% Accuracy. This new system uses both the rich neural activity recorded by intracortical electrodes and the power of language models that, when applied to the neurally decoded letters, can create rapid and accurate text.

• Unity Announces Intent to Acquire Weta Digital. Unity is the best at delivering world-class tools and technology to creators. • The Technology That Could Turn Buildings Into Climate-Fighting Tools. For the last two decades, the building industry has been working to bring down the carbon costs associated with structures and materials. The building sector accounts for a huge share of carbon emissions, so decisions about materials and engineering have big consequences for the climate. That’s especially true as more of the world’s population exits rural poverty for urban areas.

• El Salvador president plans 'Bitcoin City' financed by crypto bonds. El Salvador, which has used the US dollar for two decades, was the first country in the world to legalize bitcoin as legal tender. Bitcoin mining is the process by which new bitcoin is created using computers that solve complex mathematical problems -- a process that demands huge amounts of energy.

These bullet points are all too true. But the additional side is also that Virtual Collaboration is here, and here to stay. Facebook will be a MetaVerse company. And global consultancy companies buy thousands of VR headsets for training purposes. The world is moving faster, and possibly also slower than we think. According to Dell, the cloud is dead, long live the edge. Well, Cloud is vital as well, but we do see an Edge-first strategy everywhere.

Where the question is, how to combine these things? What are the relationships between 5G/6G, The Metaverse, Digital Twins, Oculus, and Where do you start?

When looking at the real world we can see that Telcos are getting sued because of the reason that 5G has under-delivered. And we see thought leaders say that the business IT department does not really need to be a part of their building's comfort, safety and security systems. Whilst others say that everything needs to become an IT world where others are also upskilling towards more modern hybrid teams which we could hear from Brian Turner.

One thing is for sure and that is that we are living in interesting times. Where we believe that we really need to go Beyond Buildings and back to come back to the industry armed with the most modern tools, used at the right time for the right purpose, to solve ancient problems, faster than ever before. Together of course.

Because that’s the thing as well. Humans are still making the decisions. And if we can’t make it easier for us to make smarter decisions faster, then what’s the use?

• Las Vegas to Accelerate Urban Transformation with First-Ever IoT-Enabled Digital Twin. A leading Digital Twin provider and an IoT exponent are jointly developing a technology solution to transition Las Vegas to zero carbon emissions. A significant area of downtown Las Vegas will leverage advanced 5G networking, plus cutting-edge IoT and urban Digital Twin technology to vastly improve mobility, air quality, noise pollution, water management, and emissions from major buildings.

• Five industrial IOT project rules to keep in mind. As we come out of the 2021 Microsoft Hackathon where we hooked up the EV charging stations around the Microsoft car park to the Azure cloud for utilization and load balancing optimization, here are some universal rules that are generally applicable to Industrial IoT projects, which usually can't be found in requirements specifications.

• JLL buys Building Engines for $300M. The Boston-based building operations software firm will be tucked into the JLL Technologies umbrella, Business Insider first reported. Building Engines CEO Tim Curran will become executive managing director of his company upon the closing of the transaction, which is expected by the end of the year.

• Wirepas Private 5G. In development: The world’s first and only non-cellular 5G connectivity network for enterprise IoT. Connect millions of devices even in the toughest, most demanding environments. No subscriptions fees. Coverage anywhere with a free global dedicated spectrum at 1.9 GHz. You know cellular can’t do that. But we can.

• Hundreds of 5G users file joint lawsuits over disappointing network services. Hundreds of 5G mobile users filed a joint lawsuit Wednesday against the country's three major mobile carriers, over the disappointing quality of the latest generation networks, according to their legal representative.

• Deciding Between Cloud First and Edge First? Don’t. As data volumes grow, business is moving to the edge where data that has immediate value is generated – but the cloud remains vital.

• Bye It. Many large property management companies now have a CTO who is responsible for these facilities networks and have responsibilities that in some ways mirror a CTO for a business but in a new way are completely different as they need to understand how to keep occupants physically safe from crimes or how to get occupants out of a building in an emergency or how to keep the buildings energy bill under a billion dollars as we are hitting new record high outdoor air temps everywhere.

• Bitcoin mining company buys Pennsylvania power plant to meet electricity needs. Mining the top cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum requires vast amounts of power. A single Bitcoin transaction, including the resources needed to mine the coin and to verify the transaction, can total upwards of 1,700-kilowatt hours (kWh). This ever-increasing power demand has forced large crypto mining outfits to leverage any available means to produce their power at the lowest possible cost. In some cases, this leads to mining operations literally taking power production into their own hands.

• ‘Enthusiastic Entrepreneurs’: Pre-IPO Statements On Profitability Prove To Be Larger Than Real Life. AllBirds is one of the numerous startups whose executives got ahead of themselves as they ramped up to go public, according to a Forbes analysis. “New companies don’t know how to sell, and existing companies don’t know how to buy.”

Hopefully, if we fast forward 100 years into the future, we will see that we have done things differently. Education will be different, and there will most likely be a higher degree of digitization. But who are the ones that will make this happen? Why? How? And most of all when? How can we predict the future as well as understand what we need to do to create it?

Easy. Utilize the FCC to spot the place to be.

The Future Creation Canvas is all about communication

Nicolas Waern created this during a conversation between a McKinsey lead for Construction in Europe, a Professor of Construction Education in Sweden, a facilitator with a construction background from one of the largest general contractors in the world, and also three newly graduated construction professionals in their early 20s.

It was evident that there were immense gaps between what could be done (outside the industry) what was being done (inside the industry) and what was being taught at the University (Education for the industry). Where it was interesting to look at these as different swim lanes to better understand what is happening. And most importantly what will happen, and to better predict how it will happen, by whom, and of course when.

The big squeeze

Because what do you think will happen when we start educating people in more modern ways of working where existing companies can’t change fast enough? And where do new more modern companies with digital business models and digital operating models find their way into existing industries? The existing companies will of course be squeezed where more companies cross the chasm, and existing companies try to avoid the abyss of oblivion to the far right.

From Path Dependency to Path Creation Strategies

The big dragons have of course managed to stave off the competition by eating up the would-be dragons, chewing them up, and spitting them out. Sometimes for the betterment of the world. And sometimes not.

The question is if the existing practices are good for the world? Or if we need companies that could provide faster time to value creation in more sustainable ways? As long as the value is being created and where the best products win it matters less what buzzwords make it happen or if the disruption will happen. The truth is though that it is doubtful that it will heppen within the existing industry. The path dependency is strong and it has everything to do about the (non)dynamic interactions between existing actors, education, and the ones outside the real estate industry in this case and also the customers and users.

Where some of the problems today are that some do not have a grasp on how to win at buzzword bingo. Companies can utilize most, if not all of the ingredients in the Hype Cycle today. But alas, most are fearful of Digital Twins and do not know how to leverage modern tools and technologies in isolation. Let alone, together. Where new companies don’t know how to sell, and existing companies don’t know how to buy.

But the thing is that everything that can happen will happen. And 14 years ago, Smart Phones was a buzzword where existing companies like Ericsson and Nokia thought it was just marketing hype. And most of us know what happened later. How can we solve the skill-shortage gap? What will be the next 10 slides of this presentation and how to actually start saving money, make more money and make new money today, not wait until the future?

What are the similarities and differences between what is happening within the “Smart Building space?” What can we learn from self-driving vehicles, the automotive and manufacturing sector, and how to become best buddies with the buzzword bingo side of things, leveraging modern tools to solve ancient problems?

• Oculus Quest Pro: Everything We Know So Far! The Oculus Quest Pro is an upgraded version of the Oculus Quest 2 that has been rumored throughout the summer. Those rumors turned into more on September 12th, 2021, when some smart users uncovered references to the hardware in version 32 of the Quest’s firmware.

• Google launches ‘digital twin’ tool for logistics and manufacturing. With Supply Chain Twin, companies can bring together data from multiple sources by enabling views of the datasets to be shared with suppliers and partners. The solution supports enterprise business systems that contain an organization’s locations, products, orders, and inventory operations data as well as data from suppliers and partners such as stock and inventory levels and material transportation status. Supply Chain Twin also draws from public sources of contextual data such as weather, risk, and sustainability.

• NASA adopting Apache Kafka to enable real-time data from Mars. For most of the agency’s space exploration history, NASA’s workflows from space were slow, even accounting for the transmission times required across tens of millions of miles. The building and launching process for satellites and probes happens over a long lifecycle, so missions often went into space with some technology that was already out of date. The DSN has always been reliable, but it couldn’t accommodate the massive growth of data or the real-time use of it.

• When north goes south: Is Earth's magnetic field flipping? Earth’s magnetic field is generated by the convection of molten iron in the planet’s core, around 1,800 miles (2896 km) beneath our feet. This superheated liquid generates electric currents that in turn produce electromagnetic fields. While the processes that drive pole reversal are comparatively less understood, computer simulations of planetary dynamics show that the reversals arise spontaneously. This is supported by the observation of the Sun’s magnetic field, which reverses approximately every 11 years.

• Not a single G20 country is in line with the Paris Agreement on climate, analysis shows. "Gas is a fossil fuel, and any investment into gas today risks becoming a stranded asset. And while interest in green hydrogen has grown exponentially, there is still a large number of hydrogen projects in the pipeline where it's produced from gas," Hare said. "Hydrogen produced from gas still produces carbon, and is inconsistent with reaching net zero."

• Fossil fuel firms sue governments across the world for £13bn as climate policies threaten profits. Fossil fuel companies are suing governments across the world for more than $18bn (£13bn) after action against climate change has threatened their profits, according to research conducted by campaign group Global Justice Now and provided exclusively to Sky News. Five energy companies, including British companies Rockhopper and Ascent, are using a legal process that allows commercial entities to sue governments under international laws governing trade agreements and treaties.

• Getting started with digital twins. Every digital twin needs a 3D model, sometimes called a replica in digital twin parlance. If you’re already doing architectural visualization, then you already have a 3D model of the real-world structure in question一or you have the means to create or obtain one一so this is an area you can get moving on right away.

• BIM, Revit, and the Database Dream. As buildings became more complex, different aspects of the building would be drawn by different disciplines - one set of drawings would show the mechanical systems, one would show the structural systems, and so on. To coordinate between the different disciplines (and increasingly complex architectural drawings), drawings would be created using a layered approach. Each drawing sheet would show one aspect of the building, and these could be layered on top of each other, either by printing them on clear Mylar sheets, or using something like a light table, making it possible to pick and choose which aspects of the building you wanted to see.

The game provides general descriptions of technologies and technical possibilities for products and solutions in the field of energy economics.

• Here’s What You Need to Know About Propensity Modeling. With enough data, you can develop highly accurate propensity scores. Armed with those scores, it’s possible to not only understand the probability that an individual customer will transact, but also estimate what you expect the value of that customer to be.

• CNN Makes Moments From History Available For Purchase With NFTs. Since the dawn of television, people have experienced history through video, connecting with journalism on a personal basis. Until now, there has been no way to “collect” these moments. Users can often find old footage online, or packaged up in documentaries, but they cannot “own” them or display them in the way they can with a print newspaper or magazine.

The contracts are built into the unit and cannot be changed; therefore manufacturers can now create physical streaming revenue products and may even give them out for free, since they can be assured wherever in the world the unit is, and if it is operating effectively, they will be receiving their dues. This is the beginning of a truly autonomous M2M system.

• Predictive weather files for building energy modeling by Anthony Wright. CSIRO has released future weather files and it can model Australian commercial and residential buildings under a range of climate change scenarios.

• 3D rPLA Collection by Stefan Larsson. With added 3D printed material samples for the new rPLA collections on the Lostboyslab shop. The samples are from the new rPLA collections and they are all matte, recycled, bio-derived, and easy to print with on any 1.75 mm FDM printer with amazing results. The samples are 3D printed on Prusa Mk3 with 0.1 mm layer height and of course, it has been made smart. It also has an NFC tag programmed with the URL of the product’s information. 

• Carbon neutral natural gas by Nils Söderström. Is fossil fuel devoid of emission, sounds made up, right? Nonsense, with carbon offsets we can wash those emissions right off. When calculating the CO2 absorption of a mature tree you first need to know when a tree matures. That is at age 40. It is today 2021 so planting goals for 2060 already soured last year. By the time it’s mature the tree will absorb about 20kg per year, so 50 years for one ton of carbon emissions.

• Generative AI meets Circular Design by Sean Barrett. Interesting Times Gang is super stoked to finally share what has been working on. As far as we know, Aibio is the first of its kind in the known design universe. Every year over 12 million tonnes of interior design objects and furniture end up in waste streams in the EU. Only around 10% of it is recycled or re-used. Everything else ends up in landfills or is incinerated.

“Architects always complain that it’s hard to find good clients who fully support their creative ideas and pay them on time. Most of the designs will stay on the paper forever, they could be rejected for all sorts of reasons, and most of the “paper architecture” is valueless as it is not recognized by the client. Even your design is lucky enough to get build, construction is notoriously expensive, time-consuming, and full of uncertainty. A lot of opportunities for you to get sued when the project goes wrong.

Sorry for the harsh reality, besides all that, architects are no longer the master builder in modern society. Architects act as project managers to collaborate with other consultants, engineers, contractors, clients, government officials to make a project happen, and like other professionals that provide services, we are paid by hourly rate. “

This and more will also be discussed in a future podcast titled - “The future of Construction”. But what role do architects need to take in the not-so-distant future? Will circular strategies are on the agenda for people, and how can Digital Twins, and modern tools and technologies help? What ramifications will this have for real people?
